Direct Ancestry is from IRISH Kings, an AUSTRIAN Hessian soldier, PRUSSIANS, a FRENCH Filles des Roi, FRENCH Royalty, a METIS Voyageur, ACADIANS and a Gangster ... including and descending from ... plowmen, seamstresses, nurses, WWI and WWII CANADIAN & USA military personnel, a couple of blacksmiths, railroad workers, a semi-pro hockey goalie ... and possibly a rum-runner!

The clues and the facts ...

This page documents the current research status of the first 16 SURNAMES of my genealogy, (in their order of appearance). A short, descriptive report is included when an impasse or conflicting information is encountered.

Also included is a section called LIES & LEGENDS. These are the stories gathered from oral family history or other sources ... some are yet to be resolved!

Genealogical family history studies don't end. Information is gathered and verified, errors occurr, corrections are made, collaboraters join and more data is compiled ... and so on. Eventually it is all passed along to another family member and hopefully one day a clear history emerges.

LIES & LEGENDS

O'KANE
The oldest O'CATHAIN's were Kings of Ireland; is there a connection?

LANCE
Solomon 'Hum' Lance ... A family mystery persists! Is there a connection to Al Capone's hideout in Ontario?

From John Lance
" The idea that Hum was with Capone at one time is apparently family knowledge - my dad use to mention it from time to time (he even stated that Hum had at least for awhile changed his name).  Ron Lance says that when he mentioned it to his grandmother (I think he said) she was able to show him a family file with photos and other info on Capone, and she told him it was Hum that showed/told Capone about the Algonquin Park area where Capone built a cottage/hunt camp.  I believe that Leonard had the name Chuck Nicoletti from Ron.  I also believe that Leonard did not think this name change was permanent. He said that he knew he went by Lance at the time of his death. Maybe Nicoletti was only a AKA or nickname. I was never able to confirm any of this to my own satisfaction. Following the note Leonard sent me, I was never able to contact Leonard again. I was hoping Leonard could sort it out more but I think he might have since died.  The last area I had for Leonard was the Gatineau/Ottawa area. "

Possibility: I have seen pictures of Chuck Nicoletti and there is a resemblance to Solomon Hum Lance. I wonder if someone mentioned it and the idea stuck as a nickname.

How developed was his hockey career? Verified

Michel Lentz ... reasons for the LENTZ (Linse, Lenzt) to LANCE surname change.

Our LANCE is not French-Canadian. Verified

Johannes Lentz ... and the Austrian Hessian Soldiers in Canada.

Maxime Lentz ... is listed as an innkeeper in several instances.

There is an obscure mention of Lance's Cabin (a shanty) on the Dumoine River. Research suggests the owners were a French-Canadian Lance family. Resolved

BLANCHARD
Marie Blanchard ... my Ninth Great GM was a Filles du Roi in New France. Verified

SOULIERE
Francois Souliere ... the SOULIER's were Metis voyageurs.

Henriette (Souliere) Lance ... my Mi' kMaq connection.

ROCBRUNE dit LAROCQUE / LAROCQUE
Descended from French Royalty and a Metis fur-trading / Acadian connection to this surname.

Jean-Baptiste b. 1720 and Joseph b. 1788 Voyageurs?

O'KANE

January 24, 2016
I have taken my fraternal primary family branch as far back as Thomas O'Kane and Hannah O'Gorman, both born in Ireland around 1800 and both died there. I have not identified Thomas's parents but Daniel O'Gorman and Mary Foley are the parents of Hannah. I have extensive genealogy on the descendants of Daniel and Mary.

A couple of directions for additional research are plausible ...

1. Prior to this time, the presence of the O'Kane surname in Clare is difficult to accurately trace and may be confused with others, such as KEANE and KAIN. There is a strong possibility that the County Clare surname Keane, was replaced by O'Kane at some point.

2. There is also extensive, documented, DNA proven genealogy that traces the O'Kane surname from Clare, back to the original O'CATHAIN Kings of Ireland, AD. 500. Without DNA testing of my own, I cannot definitively connect to this research either. Further reading and an additional link here.

LANCE

January 25, 2016
I have taken my maternal primary family branch as far back as Johannes Lentz and Charlotte Rocbrune dit Larocque. I believe Johannes was born in Austria abt. 1765 and participated in the American Revolution as a Hessien soldier fighting for the British. He was attached to the Brunswick, Riedesel Regiment  in Quebec 1800. Following the war he applied as a petitioner under the Von den Veldon Land Program and was one of many soldiers who remained in Canada. Charlotte was born 1761 in Oka, Quebec and they married in 1790. I have not proven the Hessien connection and I do not have any official census records for either.

I have a fairly clear descendent trace from them back to myself. The information was gathered from genealogy websites and official archives and I have some formal documents and records.

To solve ...

1. I have photography that identifies Maxime Lentz that I believe may actually be his father Michel (s/o Johannes). I also have young and older photos of a Maxime that I believe may not be of the same man. All of these come from family albums with handwritten names.

SOULIERE / LAROCQUE

February 19, 2016
I have sent a genealogical summary to 'The Centre du Patrimoine' Western Canadian Francophone and Metis Heritage'. They will investigate my Souliere and Larocque branches for any proof of Metis heritage connections. 8 - 10 week turnaround and a package will be mailed out by mid-May.

VINCENT

February 08, 2016
I located the Vincent history back to the mid-1600's. Extensive genealogy is available through well-documented church records that prove the descendant line from Pierre Vincent and Anne Gaudet.  There is a connection from Pierre Vincent back to his parents in France that will be investigated.

February 04, 2016
Charles Honore Vincent and Marthe Poirier are currently my oldest ancestors in this branch. But I have most information for Maxime Vincent and Adeline Godin and descendents.

Documentation ...

1. Edna Nighbor (deceased) produced extensive genealogy on the Vincent's. Apparently their is an 8 generation book available. Check out Renfrew bookstores, libraries etc.

2. French-Acadian history back to the mid-1600's.
